Buy fine jewellery with confidence
Short, honest explanations written with the artisans who sell on GemWorld.
The 4Cs, in the order that matters
Cut decides how much light a diamond returns and is the C you notice first. Prioritise Excellent or Ideal cut before anything else.
Colour runs from D (colourless) to Z. In white metals D–G looks identical to most eyes; in yellow or rose gold, H–J is a smart saving.
Clarity describes inclusions under 10× magnification. VS1–VS2 are eye-clean in almost every shape; SI1 can be eye-clean in rounds if the artisan confirms it.
Carat is weight, not size. Two diamonds of the same carat can look different depending on cut proportions and shape.
Lab grown or natural?
Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, optically and physically identical to mined diamonds and are graded by the same labs (IGI and GIA). They cost a fraction of the price at the same grade, which usually means a larger or better-cut stone for the same budget.
Natural diamonds carry rarity and a resale market. On GemWorld every listing states the origin in its specifications and on the certificate, so you can filter by lab grown or natural and never wonder.
Find your ring size at home
Wrap a strip of paper around the base of the finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length in millimetres. That is the circumference. Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are largest.
| US size | Circumference (mm) | Diameter (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 46.8 | 14.9 |
| 5 | 49.3 | 15.7 |
| 6 | 51.9 | 16.5 |
| 7 | 54.4 | 17.3 |
| 8 | 57.0 | 18.1 |
| 9 | 59.5 | 18.9 |
| 10 | 62.1 | 19.8 |
| 11 | 64.6 | 20.6 |
Most artisans on GemWorld offer one complimentary resize within 60 days on made-to-order rings. Eternity bands cannot be resized, so measure twice.
Choosing a metal
Platinum is the most durable and naturally white; it develops a soft patina over time. 18K gold (75% gold) is richer in colour; 14K (58%) is harder and better for everyday rings. Rose gold gets its blush from copper, white gold is usually rhodium-plated and re-plated every few years.
Caring for gemstones
Diamonds, sapphires and rubies can be cleaned with warm water, a drop of dish soap and a soft brush. Emeralds, opals, pearls and turquoise are softer or porous: no ultrasonic cleaners, no perfume, wipe with a damp cloth only.
Shipping, returns and buyer protection
Every artisan ships insured and tracked. Ready-to-ship pieces can be returned within the window stated on the listing (usually 30 days). Made-to-order and personalised pieces are exchange or resize only unless the listing says otherwise.
Payments are held by GemWorld until the piece is delivered and you confirm it matches the listing. If it does not, we mediate a refund or remake with the artisan.
Seller standards
To open a shop, jewellers verify their identity and workshop with GemWorld. Every listing must state metal purity, stone origin and certification where applicable, and the displayed price must be the full price before shipping. Shops that fall below a 4.5 rating are reviewed and can be paused.
